In truth perhaps not the most beautiful of buildings, Hotel Quinta do Lago does however have some remarkable things in its favour!

Firstly, its setting right in the middle of a wildlife reserve. The Ria Formosa Nature Sanctuary is a wonderful area of saltwater lagoons, pine forests and rich birdlife.

Secondly, its stunning beach. As visitors to the Algarve will know, vast expanses of uncrowded beaches are not easy to find but Quinta do Lago's beach - accessed by a wooden footbridge - offers miles of golden sand.

Thirdly, its recreational facilities are outstanding. As well as a large outdoor pool and children's pool, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing, tennis and the facilities of an indoor leisure complex with heated pool, sauna, gym and massage centre are available.

Quinta do Lago's 121 rooms are spacious and airy with private balconies - great for breakfast. Dining is especially good in the elegant Ca D'Oro restaurant specializing in Italian cuisine.

Work off the calories with a stroll down to the beach to one of the beach restaurants for a memorable lunch of freshly caught fish with a delicious salad and excellent white wine sangria.
